Can We Make America Better?

Today we read Arthur Meets the President. In the story, Arthur gets to meet the president because he wrote the best essay on "How I Can Make America Better". The story allowed the kids to better understand how one person can make a difference in our big world. After the story, I told the class we were going to write the same essay, but we are writing our stories to Mrs. Lacy and Mrs. Greer. We talked about how making our school better will make our city better..which will make our state better..which will make our country better. This is a hard concept for them to grasp, but I think it helped by starting small!

The thought of our "presidents" reading our writing put a whole new spin on things! They had the neatest handwriting and worked so hard on their sentences and illustrations! Their responses were so sweet and sincere.  Here are a few student examples

This student said they would help the whole world by taking the trash out and helping people when they are sick!

This student said they would bring food and candy to people with cancer

This student said she would bring soup to the old ladies :) And clean up garbage! I LOVE her illustrations.
