Sorting & Problem Solving

This week we have been working on sorting objects in different ways. We sorted household items, shapes, and other things. The Scholastic website has a fun game that is great practice. You can find it here http://www.scholastic.com/clifford/play/sortitout/sortitout.htm

Our problem solving is getting a little more challenging! We are still practicing our five and ten facts because they need to know these fluently. However, I'm trying to extend their thinking with some more challenging word problems. This also allows me to see if they are understanding how to build bigger numbers using five and ten. Here is a problem we worked this week.

I was so proud of Emmett who realized that 4 sets of 5 make twenty! He also realized that 4 and 1 make 5. My goal was for them to make the connection of making five (with 4 and 1) and then take a set of 5 away.
